Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind Script Book
After a painful breakup, Joel discovers that his girlfriend Clementine has undergone a procedure to erase her memories of their relationship. Devastated, Joel decides to undergo the same procedure to forget Clementine by having his memories erased in his sleep. The audience then follows Joel on a trip throughout his most fond memories with Clementine, in which he ultimately decides he wants to keep.
In this project, three distinct scenes were chosen to tell a limited version of the film through a movie script book, and complimentary short motion piece. The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind movie script book and motion piece effortlessly capture the tone of the film. The limited color pallet alludes to the overall cold, lonely nature of the film, and the hazy graphic style is representative of the journey of the audience, as they scramble through Joel’s old memories. Guided through this surreal experience, expressive typography is used as a storytelling tool to transport the viewer into the world of the film.
Goal
Create an interpretive typographic book and motion piece that represents three scenes from the film Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.
The Prompt
Pick a film or a play, choose three key scenes and transform it into a typographic book. This book should be your interpretation of the film; do not use the existing logo, typography or imagery from the film. Using the same film, focus on a single crucial scene. Create a minimum 15 second video using the script from that scene as a trailer or animated movie poster.
Mood Board
COLD | LONELY | ABSTRACT | FORGETTABLE
Final Design
The final script book is moody and dramatic. The size of a small journal (much like the memory journal Joel keeps in the film), the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie script book fits in your hand with ease, and yet is big enough not to be forgotten as your writing down your loose memories. The fuzzy graphic dots throughout the book act as storytelling devices used to set the tone of the film. Similar to an ink blot test, the reader’s mind can fill in the gaps lost throughout the progression of the story. The paired motion piece is similarly simplistic in nature, yet slightly different in design. Hazy liquid like graphics are used to capture the fluid nature of a train of thought. And again, a limited color pallet is in place to depict the somber tone of the movie.
